my morning routine

This blog is about my morning routine.

I've been experimenting with my morning routine since I was 15, so I've been through hundreds of phases of trial and error, stripping away all unnecessary aspects.

I'll update this blog as I make changes.

Here's my current morning routine:

  1. Run (for 30 mins)
  2. Shower (cold)
  3. Brain dump (1000 words)

  1. Run for 30 mins

I got into the habit of running in my previous job. The founder of the company said running is the only thing that keeps her sane. If she didn't run, she'd be smoking and doing drugs to keep her calm. That was enough to convince me.

I run outside. Sunlight first thing in the morning is absolutely essential for me. I find that when I don't get sunlight in the morning, I feel lethargic for the whole day.

Running outside means I can get both benefits at the same time.

  1. Cold shower

I need to shower after my run, and a cold shower gets me clean, and wakes me up like you wouldn't believe.

This is also when I wash my hair (cold water is better for hair health).

  1. Brain Dump

The above 2 practices prime me for this part.

I write 1000 words before I do anything productive in the morning.

I've been quite consistent with my journalling habit (over 5 years now), and I find that it helps me process thoughts and ideas I have swirling around in my brain. It's this practice that helps me get ideas for videos and blogs. I couldn't be creative without this practice.

Why 1000 words?

I find that anything less just doesn't do it for me.
The great ideas only show themselves around the 700 word mark. Before the 700 mark, I just type random stuff, which is great for clearing my brain, but no good ideas show themselves yet.
